How were you involved with TPU?

I spent time in the irc channel talking about programming. It was there that I learned my appreciation for RTFM.

How about a capsule summary of the programming you did in your TPU years?

It was mostly test programs. During that time I got enough of a grasp on C to be able to become more of a real programmer. Programming didn't come as naturally as it does to some, but I got a good foundation during my time in TPU.

What are you up to now professionally and/or academically?

I hack lisp and I love it. I never got along with schools well enough to go and get a degree, but when you can't put down programming for too long you eventually have to get good at it. I use LispWorks and PostgreSQL for database programming.

What are your favorite programming languages and tools today?

Topping my list of favorite language would be Lisp. Lexical closures opened my mind to new ways of thinking about how to solve problems. Also, I am doing things with lisp macros that I only wish could be possible to imagine with C# or C.

My next is C#. It is another language where you spend more time expressing your programming problem than you do managing your resources. When writing user applications it's nice to have a GC to cleanup after you. It's also nice to be able to throw a quick GUI together while being able to enjoy a language with enjoyable syntax.

What sorts of software are you most often developing lately?

Database applications, php scripts for my HylaFAX server, and whatever small utilities I feel like I want. I recently put together a menu program for enumerating and browsing the DVDs I have ripped onto my hard disk.
